The Ply[1] is a species inhabiting ZDR in Metroid Dread.
Description[]
The Ply is a small flying creature that appears in Artaria, Cataris, and Dairon, sometimes traveling in flocks. It has a head resembling a large eyeball, and a barbed tail similar to War Wasps. A Ply will track Samus Aran and charge at her with its stinger.
Each Ply is quite agile and a small target, making it challenging to shoot. The Metroid Dread Report recommends that the Wide Beam gives Samus an advantage due to its scattershot projectiles. A Ply is also vulnerable to the Melee Counter when it is just about to dash into Samus, allowing her to stun it for an easy kill. The Dash Melee is also effective at instantly killing a Ply that is close to the ground.
After the X Parasites are released from Elun, every Ply becomes infected by the X. However, their appearance and behavior remains unchanged, aside from releasing X upon their demise.
Variants[]
Blindfly[]
The Blindfly[2] is a variant of Ply found in Ferenia. It can only be encountered after the X Parasites are released from Elun and therefore may be an instance of the X altering the DNA of Ply hosts, much like the Goliath. It has the same body structure as the Ply, but with a reddish tint to its body and purple wings; its eyeball is replaced with dark red flesh, with the Blindfly's name implying that it no longer has vision. Despite this, the Blindfly behaves identically to the Ply, although it is stronger and cannot be killed by a single Dash Melee.
Official data[]
Metroid Dread Report Volume 8[]
"A small, flying creature whose head resembles a large eyeball. Once it detects Samus, it follows her, aims, and then charges with its large-spiked tail. Sometimes found in flocks. Its small body and agile movements can make it tricky to hit, but the Wide Beam is quite effective against them."
Trivia[]
- Although the Ply's body has a light blue tint in-game, its concept artwork in Metroid Mission Logs shows it with a reddish tint similar to the Blindfly.
- The Ply's name appears to be a shortened form of its internal model name, Poisonfly.
- Plies are used in the Samus Screen tutorials for the Storm Missile, Wave Beam, and Power Bomb.
