In time, we created machines to open rifts into our enemy's world. Volunteer scouts went through the rifts and found a twisted world, harsh and poisonous... a Dark Aether.

—Conflict, First Phase: Dark Aether (Luminoth Lore)

Meditation Vista

A Portal generation system is an artificial Dark Portal or Light Portal generator of Luminoth design. Although a majority of Portals encountered in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes are "natural", some are artificially generated through machines. These Portals must be energized by scanning an Interface Module on the machine, which will activate the Portal for a short period of time.

Some of these generated require puzzles to be solved before they can be used. The Portal Terminal Portal generation system in the Agon Wastes relies on solar power, which Samus must provide by moving solar lenses into place with a conveyor system in the room.

A functional generated Portal appears in the Hall of Honored Dead in the Temple Grounds, but it is unreachable and unusable due to "safety measures". This is later revealed to be because a wall of Phazon is blocking the portal in its Dark Aether equivalent, the Sky Temple Gateway in the Sky Temple Grounds. It is only used during the climax of the game, where the Phazon wall explodes after Samus defeats Dark Samus. She then runs through the Portal and emerges from the other side before Dark Aether collapses. The Portal can be reached through a complicated series of jumps, but is non-functional.
