Progressive Scan Mode (Progressive Mode) is an option with certain Nintendo GameCube games, including Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. It allows the game to display a higher resolution image on EDTVs and HDTVs. One can only use Progressive Scan Mode if they have a TV that accepts such an input, and a Nintendo GameCube Component Video cable, which can only be obtained through ordering from Nintendo. On some TVs, activating Progressive Scan Mode will set the display image to a 16:9 widescreen format.

To activate Progressive Scan Mode, the B button must be pressed and held while the GCN logo is being displayed, until prompted to activate the mode. If done correctly, the prompt will appear in thick white lettering underneath the Nintendo logo. The player has the option to then activate the mode or not. When an option is selected, the screen will appear black for a second or two before returning to the Nintendo logo sceen with the white lettering, the text itself being changed to reflect the option chosen. There is a time limit for making a selection; not pressing anything will simply boot the game under interlaced mode (as if NO was selected).
