"Queen Metroid Ambience" is an unnamed theme from Metroid II: Return of Samus. It was composed by Ryoji Yoshitomi.

Description[]

This theme is played exclusively in one corridor in Phase 9, just before Samus Aran enters the Queen's nest and battles the Queen Metroid. The Queen Metroid's cries can be heard accompanying the track during gameplay. Notably, the theme only plays once the Metroid larvae have been fully exterminated; if Samus enters the corridor without having completed this task, there is no background music.

This theme is one of the most minimalist music tracks in the entire Metroid series. It consists almost entirely of one single low note repeated indefinitely, with percussive sounds heard very quietly underneath. This endless droning is similar to a blaring alarm, serving as a warning for what lies ahead. It builds directly into the battle theme for the Queen Metroid. The theme can be heard here: [1]

In Metroid: Samus Returns, this theme was effectively replaced with Area10 Basic, which is carried over from previous rooms in the Metroid hive, and therefore this final corridor does not contain any unique music tracks. However, Matad Area01 Damage likewise consists of low droning ambience, and it is played in the rooms leading up to a major boss battle; in this case, it plays in Area 6 just before the battle against Diggernaut. Therefore, Matad Area01 Damage may have possibly been Daisuke Matsuoka's reference to the original theme, although this is not confirmed.
