Biography[]

Backstory[]

Reger Tokabi was born in the northern reaches of the fourth moon of Soletine. His family came from a long line of hunters and survivors due to the scarcity of resources, and they worshiped the god Sollan. Tokabi chose to join the Galactic Federation, putting his marksmanship to use as a sniper in order to provide for his family. He felt conflicted on the matter, as the teachings of Sollan encourage pacifism. Tokabi eventually became part of HERC Unit Delta, a covert unit sent to eliminate threats and maintain peace on planets on the fringe. He operated much like a Bounty Hunter, being paid by the Federation for each mission.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond[]

Tokabi was at the UTO Research Center on Tanamaar when the Lamorn artifact was activated, transporting him to Viewros. He ended up in Ice Belt with an injured leg, forcing him to hole up in the facility to survive.

Eventually, Tokabi noticed Samus Aran being hunted by Snow Wolves, and used the turret in the Control Room to save her from the ambush. Once Samus reached him, he explained his situation, and the two formulated a plan to restore power to the facility so Samus could obtain the Master Teleporter Key in the quarantine area.

Description[]

Tobaki specializes in sniper firearms and prefers solitude. His family worships the god Sollan.

Galactic Federation Sniper: Reger Tokabi
An infantryman and former hunter who specializes in long-range precision shooting. Armed with a KT-6116 short-to-long-range rifle with visor-linked scope.
Logbook entry
Corporal Reger Tokabi is a sniper in the Galactic Federation. Once a hunter working on remote worlds, he volunteered for Federation service in the hopes of finding stability. He enjoys solitude and dislikes working with others, always preferring to go on missions solo without a spotter.

The Tokabi family has worshipped the god Sollan for generations, Reger included. He is never without his arrowhead-shaped talisman and strongly believes his continued survival is only because of its protection. Unfortunately, his beliefs are often in conflict with his missions and their use of his talents, which is a source of much loathing and personal strife.

Trivia[]

  • Tokabi's ethnicity is seemingly inspired by Indigenous American peoples. His actor and face model, Kalani Queypo, is a Hawaii-born Indigenous American who is a founding member of the National American Indian Committee at SAG/AFTRA. Tokabi's life as a hunter, connection to wildlife, and belief in a creator deity are typical traits of Indigenous Americans in pop culture. His name also follows the Choctaw naming convention of adding "-abi" to a man's name after they have killed.[2] His god Sollan further bears ties to the Choctaw culture via worship of a solar great spirit.
  • Tokabi's Native American roots may be a nod to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, as several members of the original team from Retro Studios formerly worked on the game at Iguana Entertainment (which closed in 2004).
  • Tokabi is the first human character to explicitly believe an in-universe religion, though he admits he is not a very close follower due to the Sollan faith's pacifist strictures and his sniper profession.
