Rhedogians[1] (レドギア星人 Redgear?)[2] are powerful creatures encountered in Metroid: Other M as mini-bosses several times during Samus Aran's investigation of the BOTTLE SHIP.

Description[]

Rhedogians are dark blue in color, and possess both organic and mechanical equipment on their bodies. Though it is never outright stated, Rhedogians are apparently one of the many illegal bioweapons developed onboard the BOTTLE SHIP. They have red structures around their shoulders which resemble eyes, though it appears their true eye is the round object in the center of their chest. Their massive claw-like appendages, fins, and tail make them appear more suited to marine environments, but they have no trouble ambushing Samus in diverse environments all over the BOTTLE SHIP.

The Rhedogian demonstrates heavy resilience to many threats, including magma, Galactic Federation Freeze Guns and, initially, Lethal Strikes. While fleeing from the second encounter, one dove into magma only to reappear unscathed. It was also able to regenerate its appendages between each encounter with Samus, and is one of the few enemies on the BOTTLE SHIP able to take several Screw Attack hits. Despite their impressive resilience, Rhedogians can still be defeated in one hit with a Power Bomb.

It is believed that Samus encounters a single Rhedogian during her main mission, and that this individual is fought by her four times before finally perishing. Upon her post-credits return to recover the helmet of Adam Malkovich, she fights two additional Rhedogians summoned by Phantoon in the "path of perils".

Battle[]

In the first two encounters with a Rhedogian, it remains grounded for the entire battle. It is a very swift fighter, able to dodge many of Samus' shots and only open while it is attacking. Its basic attacks include swinging its telescopic arms and rushing Samus with its appendages. It cannot be hit with an Overblast, as it will simply buck Samus off. The Rhedogian has two grappling maneuvers: in the first it grabs Samus with one arm and scrapes her along the ground, and in the other it grabs her with its appendages before throwing her back. Neither can be Counter Attacked, and therefore must be avoided.

After taking some damage, the Rhedogian will occasionally fire a large purple laser from its eye. Sometimes it will briefly charge beforehand, turning its eye red and absorbing any beam shots that come its way. If Samus strikes it with a Missile during this state, it will stun the creature. This attack is also prone to glitching, leaving the Rhedogian stuck with its red eye open until Samus somehow disrupts it.

Rhedogian battle 2

Samus attempting an Overblast on the Rhedogian in the Cryosphere.

By hitting the Rhedogian with enough Ice Beam shots, its appendages will freeze. Following this, stunning the Rhedogian will open it up for a Lethal Strike that shatters its appendages, dealing heavy damage but not guaranteeing a kill. In this weakened state, an Overblast cannot even be attempted on the Rhedogian, as Samus has nothing to land on to prepare a shot. This also eliminates its appendage grapple attack, and forces it to retreat during the first two encounters.

In its third and fourth encounters, the Rhedogian begins to use its levitation in combat. While airborne, it can fire a spray of homing missiles to rain down on Samus (also used once at the beginning of the first encounter). It can also divebomb Samus with its appendages.

Encounters[]

The Rhedogian first attacks Samus after her battle with seven Super Zebesians on the Materials Transfer Lift. Upon shattering its appendages with a Lethal Strike, it flees back down the lift shaft to fight another day.

The bioweapon next appears in a large room in the Pyrosphere, battling Anthony Higgs while supported by several Sovas. Samus saves him after the creature attempts to drop him into a pool of lava - if Samus fails to use the Grapple Beam, it drops Anthony in for an instant Game Over. Samus and Anthony successfully repulse the Rhedogian, but it escapes by jumping into the lava. During the battle, the Rhedogian cannot kill Anthony, though its attacks may occasionally hit him.

The Rhedogian ambushes Samus during her hunt for the reptilian monster. It appears at the top of the Desert Refinery, crashing through an elevator and forcing her to SenseMove. After Samus hits it with a Missile while it is airborne, it falls into the pit surrounding the refinery.

Rhedogian SenseMove dodge arm Biosphere

Samus dodges the Rhedogian with SenseMove in the fourth and final encounter in the Biosphere.

After Samus is informed by "Madeline Bergman" about Sector Zero from the Bioweapon Research Center, Samus heads for the Main Elevator. Whilst travelling through the Biosphere, Samus is again jumped by the Rhedogian in a room common to skirmishes. The creature finally succumbs to Samus's Plasma Beam and Super Missiles and is defeated once and for all, exploding and leaving the Seeker Missiles for Samus to collect.

Two different Rhedogians are later fought one after the other in the post-credits sequence as Samus returns to the BOTTLE SHIP. They are at the very end of the gauntlet in the long hall just before reaching the Control Bridge.

Mini-Bosses (p. 16)
Rhedogian
"The Rhedogian is one of the toughest enemies you will face--more difficult than some bosses, in fact. It can fly, it can move at super speed, and worst of all, it has a large repertoire of attacks. It will attempt two swipes with its arms at first. Dodge both with SenseMove while you power up your Charge Beam and fire as soon as the Rhedogian misses you for the second time. Continue this evasive counterattacking until it flies into the air or begins to power up its laser. When it does, switch to missiles and weaken it even more. When it's ready to fall, rush in and put the Rhedogian away with a Lethal Strike."

Warning: Fan Translation(s) Ahead

This article, section, or file contains text that is unofficially translated by Metroid fans. Some information (such as proper English names) may not be accurate. If an official translation becomes available, the fan translation(s) may be replaced.

"Rhedogians are massive flying creatures. It's capable of reflecting missiles and beams with a laser, wielding a variety of different attack patterns."

Trivia[]

  • The Rhedogian bears striking resemblance to members of the extinct group of invertebrates known as Anomalocaridid, especially such ones as Anomalocaris. Translated notes from the concept art show that the Rhedogian was partially modeled after the latter,[3] and the game's internal files refer to it with the codename "Anomalo".[4]
  • The Rhedogian has similarities to the Charge Beam Beast in Metroid: Zero Mission, such as their weakpoints in the form of their eyes. When Samus is unable to completely defeat them, they will retreat only to reappear in another area. However, it is possible to defeat Charge Beam Beast any time it appears depending on the player's skill, while the battles with Rhedogians and their outcome are determined entirely by the game's plot sequence.
  • Rhedogian shares a similar role to the Diggernaut in Metroid: Samus Returns and Security Robot B.O.X. in Metroid Fusion, as a persistent enemy that attacks Samus multiple times and is eventually defeated to grant her an upgrade. Interestingly, both the Rhedogian and Security Robot B.O.X. are biomechanical in nature and encountered in former Federation facilities where secret research was being conducted.
  • The Rhedogian's Japanese name includes the kanji 星人, which is shared with various Other M enemies including the Zebesian. Similarly, their English names end with the -ian suffix. Since this name indicates that the Zebesian is an inhabitant of Zebes, this may imply that Rhedogians are native to a (currently-unseen) planet named Redgear (レドギア?) or Rhedogia.
