Ring Beam Units (リングビームユニット?)[1] are small, swivelling turrets installed in the BOTTLE SHIP's Bioweapon Research Center in Metroid: Other M.

Description[]

Large numbers of the Ring Beam Units have been installed in four long interconnected corridors leading to Room MW. They are completely indestructible, though the Screw Attack can still hit them without inflicting any damage to them. Every few seconds, a Ring Beam Unit will appear from inside the wall, fire off a Rinkas directly at Samus Aran, then return into the wall before infinitely repeating the process.

The Rinkas move slowly, but cause severe damage and are more than enough to distract Samus from opening the many Multi-Lock Blast Shields blocking the path ahead. In addition, these particular Rinkas have lost their ability to pass through solid surfaces and instead bounce off of them, making them more dangerous. Samus can destroy them using her Arm Cannon or Screw Attack; if she does not, then the Rinkas spawned can easily swarm her, as up to ten or more can appear at one time. If two such projectiles collide, both will implode and vanish.

At the time of Metroid Other M's release, the projectiles fired by Ring Beam Units had exclusively served as defenses for Mother Brain in previous entries in the Metroid series. Thus, the turrets' presence on the BOTTLE SHIP serve as a foreshadowing of the eventual confrontation with the android that carries a copy of Mother Brain's AI. Once Samus reaches the Navigation Booth directly before Room MW, all Ring Beam Units permanently disengage.

This article, section, or file contains text that is unofficially translated by Metroid fans. Some information (such as proper English names) may not be accurate. If an official translation becomes available, the fan translation(s) may be replaced.

"Placed on walls, they aim at Samus and fire using a Rinka. The Rinka can be destroyed."

Trivia[]

  • A similar turret appears in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. During the battle with Aurora Unit 313, there are mechanisms located on the floor that shoot red tracking projectiles similar to Rinkas.
  • Ring Beam Units are closer in appearance to the cannons that defend Mother Brain and Central Units rather than the actual mechanisms that spawn Rinkas for the latter two entities. The mechanisms are block-shaped generators, but are nonetheless referred to as turrets[2] or cannons[3] in certain media.
