Scan Pulse pickup

Scan Pulse in Aeion Ability Artifact form.

Scan Pulse is the first Aeion ability in Metroid: Samus Returns. It is acquired from an Aeion Ability Artifact in the Surface area. When used, Samus is enveloped in a blue orb which releases outward in a pulse, revealing Map data over a 9x9 square range around her, and breakable walls, floors or blocks within that range will begin flashing and beeping for 10 seconds. Pressing A before the pulse is released cancels use of the ability. As with other Aeion abilities, using the Scan Pulse consumes Aeion. If a Metroid is in a nearby room when the Scan Pulse is used, the creature will emit a roar which through close listening can be used to locate the titular creature. This ability serves roughly the same purpose as the Scan Visor and X-Ray Visor from the Prime series, and the X-Ray Scope in Super Metroid.

Use of the Scan Pulse leaves a permanent mark on the Map screen, showing the areas that were scanned with the Aeion ability.

Trivia quiz[]

"When it comes to hunting aliens, you’re on a need-to-know basis. As in, you need to know what’s around you! That’s why Scan Pulse is the Aeion Ability that best matches the way you’d want to play the Metroid: Samus Returns game. You can use Scan Pulse to scan the surrounding area, then reveal information on the touch screen map. You’ll even be able to see which nearby blocks are breakable."

Metroid: Samus Returns boxart[]

"Briefly reveal nearby breakable objects and map info."

Metroid: Samus Returns manual[]

Metroid: Samus Returns Official Guide[]

THE ARMORY - AEION ABILITIES (p. 15)
SCAN PULSE
"Activating Scan Pulse allows you to map out a large portion of the area on the bottom screen. It also reveals most of the nearby hidden destructible Blocks for a short time. Add to that the fact that it barely uses any Aeion Energy, and you've got one of the most useful abilities in the game."
WALKTHROUGH - SURFACE (p. 38)
AEION ABILITY: SCAN PULSE
"This is one of the most useful upgrades in the game. It not only temporarily reveals destructible Blocks, but it fills out a large portion of your map whenever you use it and shows the locations of item upgrades. A circle inhabiting a square on the map indicates an item upgrade is in that section. Also, using Scan Pulse doesn't cost a lot of Aeion Energy.
Look at the top of your bottom screen to see a newly established yellow bar. This is your Aeion Energy, which depletes every time you use an Aeion Ability. There are a few ways you can refill this bar, the most common of which is by defeating enemies and collecting the yellow orbs they leave behind. You can also return to these monstrous Chozo heads (called Aeion Ability Artifacts) or to Chozo Statues to find orbs of pure Aeion that refill your entire bar on contact. In addition, look for Aeion Orbs in fixed locations around the map, same as you would a Recharge Station. Keep your eyes open!
One caveat regarding the Scan Pulse: it doesn't reveal the locations of Blocks that break on touch, so you're still in the dark regarding those. Our advice still stands: if you see a long, narrow stretch of platform, jump as far across it as you can to avoid falling through hidden Pit Blocks."

Trivia[]

  • Before the Scan Pulse is acquired, M2 Surface Arr can be heard in the first caverns of the planet. After the Scan Pulse is obtained, the theme is replaced with Surface 1, sounding closer to the original version from Metroid II: Return of Samus.
  • The Pulse Radar in Metroid Dread functions similarly to the Scan Pulse, albeit without the map scan.
  • The Chozo statue with the Scan Pulse symbol resembles Raven Beak, possessing a similar kabuto helm and a pair of wings.
