Barbara Boeykens in She's cutting throats

She's cutting throats is a French commercial for Metroid: Other M. It was directed by Julien Seri, produced by Alerte Orange[1], and features Barbara Boëykens. It was one of two similar commercials for the game, directed by Seri.

The commercial can be viewed here, and the director's cut here.

Synopsis[]

The commercial depicts a young woman (Barbara Boëykens), whose hair is styled to resemble that of Samus Aran in Other M, in her bedroom. She watches clips from the game of Adam Malkovich briefing Samus in the past, and then Samus walking away from him as she leaves the Galactic Federation Army. The woman sits up as a clip of Samus's Power Suit activating is shown, followed by a sequence of gameplay clips.

The woman plays the game with a look of intensity on her face; the camera at one point panning to her Wii Remote as she fights a group of enemies. Then she points the Remote at the screen, demonstrating the game's Search View mode by firing a Missile at the Brug Mass's face. The woman leans forward, licking her lips and then smirking at the screen. She continues to play as the game's cover and the Wii logo are displayed onscreen.

The commercial is narrated from Samus's perspective (by Laura Zichy), musing on her relationship with Adam and why she became a Bounty Hunter. The Title theme plays over the first half of the commercial, while Nemesis Ridley plays over the latter half.

Narration[]

Il était comme un père pour moi, aujourd'hui encore je mes demande pourquoi je les quitter. Je suis devenue chasseuse de primes pour lui prouver ma valeur. Seul dans ma quête, je parcours l'univers pour tous les anéantir. Je me battre. Mon destin est entre vos mains. Metroid: Other M, le 3 Septembre, sur Wii.

Rough translation: He was like a father to me, even today I wonder why I left them. I became a bounty hunter to prove my worth to him. Alone in my quest, I travel the universe to destroy them all. I fight. My destiny is in your hands. Metroid: Other M, September 3, on Wii.

—Samus Aran

Director's cut[]

My second commercial for the famous game.

—Julien Seri

Barbara Boeykens cutting a throat

On his Vimeo channel, Julien Seri has a slightly longer cut of the commercial that omits Zichy's narration. It begins with the young woman curled up on her bed, before she falls back and tosses around on it. Adam is heard asking "Any objections, Lady?", with Samus giving him a thumbs-down, and then activating her Power Suit during the training sequence, set years later. It is at this point that the woman sits up to play the game.

There is an additional shot of the woman grunting softly and gritting her teeth as she dodges the Vorash in the "lava cavern", with this gameplay displayed on her television screen. She makes a throat cutting gesture upon defeating a Griptian, hence Seri's title, before escaping the Vorash.

Male version[]

I am Samus Aran, Bounty Hunter. They tried to vanquish me so many times. I hunted them down across the entire universe. My vengeance will be relentless. My fate is in your hands. Metroid: Other M, September 3rd on Wii.

—Samus Aran

Male equivalent to She's cutting throats

Seri also directed a second commercial that features a male player (portrayed by French model Antoine Huber) playing the game in his living room. Notably, it opens with a shot of Zero Suit Samus from behind, and the player checking her out. This is followed by Samus activating her Power Suit, and the flashback of the final battle with Mother Brain, including the baby's death. The player combats several enemies, before encountering Ridley's clone and fighting him, again pointing the Wii Remote at the screen to use Search View. Upon firing a Missile at Ridley's face, the player exclaims "Yes!" The commercial ends with Samus firing a shot at Ridley as he escapes.

It can be viewed here. A version with English subtitles can be viewed here.
