The Shine Sink glitch being performed in the "upper shipyard".
The Shine Sink is a glitch in Metroid Dread. It involves storing a Shinespark, performing at least one Flash Shift at least three tiles away from a wall, Sliding, turning around, and then Shinesparking with the Grapple Beam enabled. With this complete, the player can activate the Shinespark and Slide to clip downwards, which necessitates shooting the Grapple Beam to avoid the game detecting Samus being out of bounds and causing an instant Game Over.[1] Alternatively, the player can press L to aim. This causes Samus to fall down when the control stick is pushed down, allowing her to clip through two tiles.
There are multiple uses for this glitch, such as stealing the Omega Cannon from E.M.M.I.-05IM's Zone. It can be used in the "upper shipyard" (pictured right) to phase into the walled-off portion with a Shakernaut, which is normally obstructed by a Grapple Beam Block from the other side. Additionally, the Shine Sink can be performed to skip the Plasma Beam and releasing the X Parasites, the Cross Bombs, and the Twin Robot Chozo Soldiers battled in Ferenia.
A similar glitch is called the "Bomuhey Skew" by fans, named after the speedrunner who discovered it. The Skew results in Samus facing the screen when she moves. This can also be used to phase through floors.[2]
