The Space Jump Boots are an upgrade for Samus's Power Suit that works by utilising Samus's jet pack which allows her an extra jump in midair. This upgrade is highly useful for clearing tall gaps, or for strafing and side-stepping more efficiently.
The Space Jump Boots only appear in the Metroid Prime series. While it is not visible in the first-person, Samus spins for the second jump as in the 2-D games' Spin Jumps. The spinning can be viewed during multiple cutscenes prior to the game, as well as the final battle with Metroid Prime, and multiplayer mode in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.
In Metroid Prime the upgrade is acquired on Tallon IV, in the Tallon Overworld. While normally obtainable immediately after acquiring the Boost Ball upgrade, she can acquire the Space Jump Boots early a few seconds right after landing on the planet via Sequence Breaking. In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, it was stolen by the Ing, namely the Jump Guardian, who is killed by Samus to retrieve it. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, it is included in the beginning of the game, and is not lost. The upgrade does not appear in Metroid Prime Hunters, but bounty hunters in that game do have the Jump Boots which allow them to jump once after walking off a ledge.
This upgrade should not be confused with the Space Jump, a highly advanced movement system featured in the 2-D Metroid games which allows Samus to spin jump multiple times in the air.
In Metroid Dread, Samus has an identical ability called the Spin Boost, which allows her to spin jump a second time in the air.
Early Space Jump Boots[]
The Space Jump Boots can be obtained immediately after landing on Tallon IV using a multitude of ways, many of which may differ by version.
In the original NTSC release of Metroid Prime, through a Sequence Break. In the Landing Site, Samus must stand on the right rear thruster of her Gunship, and lock-on to a Glowing spidervine from afar with her Scan Visor. The spidervine is too far away to be scanned, but can still be locked onto. After this, Samus must "Strafe/Dash jump" - release the lock-on button as the jump button is pressed - to the right to end up on the ledge leading to the Alcove. From here, Samus can obtain the Space Jump Boots much earlier than intended.
In the European and Player's Choice versions of Prime, the "Scan Dash" technique has been patched out, making the original Sequence Break impossible. However, it is still possible to obtain the Space Jump Boots early. To do so, Samus must enter Temple Hall, lock onto a Seedling, and maintain the lock-on while walking backwards to the Gunship, at which point she can dash off of it as with the original technique.[1]
Metroid Prime Remastered now adds an invisible wall to the small ledge, making it impossible for Samus to land on it using the Lock-on Dash. However, it is still very much possible to obtain the Space Jumps Boots early. If Samus lands on the ledge with the invisible barrier, there is a chance she may stick to its edge and not fall off of it. From here, if she slowly paces upward-right without falling off, with enough height, she can then jump off and land onto the next highest ledge, the one where a door resides. From there, Samus can walk and jump to the boots as normal.[2]
An explanation of the technique by Zoid Kirsch follows:
“ | Metroid Prime Dev Stories #13: Strafe jumping, i.e. getting the Space Jump early. When you are locked onto a target in Metroid Prime, pressing the jump button does a sideways dash. This lets the player easily strafe around a target and dodge incoming fire. 1/4
This sideways strafe jump sets a horizontal velocity on the player that continues to circle around the target while locked on. But if you unlock the target just as the strafe jump starts, Samus keeps the horizontal momentum without the lock on pull. 2/4 This allows a larger horizontal distance traversal than a normal jump. Using this momentum lets Samus catch the edge of the cliff beside her ship and get the Space Jump early upon landing. 3/4 Creative use of the game physics and movement that results in acquiring items out of order allows creative exploration of the game world. Sequence breaks like this are very much part of Metroid. 4/4 |

Trivia[]
- Samus utilized the upgrade in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, where it was used exactly the same as in the Prime games. This makes it one of a few aspects that originated in the Smash Bros. series and found their way into Metroid. Others include the Power Grip and the Paralyzer's name.
- In Smash, Samus' first jump is a standing jump with her feet and her second jump is a spin jump. This is also exactly how her jumps appear when using Space Jump Boots in the multiplayer mode for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, while was likely inspired by Smash.
- In Metroid Prime, it is possible for Samus to perform a makeshift triple-jump instead of the usual double-jump. When Samus jumps near her ship, she is given an extra boost to help her climb on, and the height is exactly the same as a second jump. She can then perform her usual "second jump" to reach a height she is normally unable to do, equal to three jumps.
- This can only be done directly after obtaining the Space Jump Boots. Quitting the game will remove the extra lift.
- Strangely in the Logbook, they are referred to as "boot-mounted thrusters", despite working via Samus's jet pack (as seen during the item acquisition cutscene in Echoes). This raises the question of why they are called "Boots" in the first place, and why they are represented by a pair of boots.
- Curiously, Echoes multiplayer refers to Samus's second jump as a Space Jump[4].
