Samus prepares to unlock a Storm Missile Box.
A Storm Missile Box is a type of obstacle that appears in Metroid Dread, blocking access to passages on ZDR. Visually it appears as a metallic block with five lamps on the side. Each Storm Missile Box is connected to five nearby buttons, which are green by default and change to red when hit by projectile weapons. The lamps on the block itself change in color to mirror the buttons' status.
To bypass a Storm Missile Box, Samus Aran must lock onto each button with Storm Missiles and shoot them simultaneously, which will cause the block to disintegrate. This makes the boxes similar to Multi-Lock Blast Shields and locking mechanisms in earlier games, which must be hit with simultaneous Seeker Missiles. After the block itself disintegrates, its buttons lose their function and remain red for the remainder of the game. The Storm Missile upgrade is required to unlock these boxes; even if Samus manages to hit all buttons at once with another weapon, the box will remain locked.
Storm Missile Boxes are found in Burenia, Ferenia, and Ghavoran.
