In Metroid: Other M, submachine guns are one of several real-life weapons used by all members of the 07th Platoon in combat (barring Samus Aran). It is one of two weapons to be used by everyone (the other being the Freeze Gun) as assault rifles are carried only by Adam and Lyle and the Plasma Gun is only carried by Anthony. Initially, the soldiers use their submachine guns when fighting the Brug Mass (to little avail), until Adam authorizes the use of Freeze Guns for the rest of the mission. Maurice and James are later seen using their submachine guns when attacked at the Exam Center by bioweapons. After this, they are not used for the rest of the game.
