A Sucker Plant,[1][2] also known as a Samus Eater (サムス イーター Samusu Ītā)[3] or adventurer-eating plant,[4] is a carnivorous flower found in Brinstar and Sector 2 (TRO) in Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, respectively. It is a carnivorous plant with features similar to terrestrial plants like the Venus flytrap, Rafflesia, and pitcher plant. True to its name, it will chew on Samus if she is caught in its maw.
Description[]
Super Metroid[]
Red Sucker Plants are found on the ground or ceiling of several rooms within the red section of Brinstar, always growing next to red, organic spikes. Other flowers seen in the area's background may also be Samus Eaters.
When at rest, their top petals pulsate calmly, but if Samus moves into their vicinity, the center of the flower blooms to reveal a ring of teeth that grabs her tightly. The Sucker Plant gnaws on Samus eight times for sixteen total units of energy, then pauses and relaxes its grip. If Samus does not jump away during this pause, it will grab her again and repeat the process.
Sucker Plants usually grow in narrow corridors containing small platforms or destructible bridges, necessitating caution to traverse these rooms without touching the flowers. The damage recoil from nearby spikes and enemies can also knock Samus into nearby Sucker Plants. A fake or dormant Sucker Plant hides the entrance to a chamber with a Power Bomb Tank in the "Beta Power Bomb Room".
Several Sucker Plants act similar to Air Holes by serving as nests for Zebbos, while others contain Yapping Maws that extend out of the water to pull prey into the flower's maw.
A Sucker Plant appears in the Super Metroid manga, where Samus is offended when the plant spits her out, presumably for her foul taste. "Gourmet" Expert
Metroid Fusion[]
Metroid Fusion
Three Sucker Plants appear in pools of water during the battle with Nettori, accompanied by two Sucker Plant Buds which hang on thick vines and release harmful, floating spores. The carnivorous flowers have green stalks, yellow teeth, and their petals are pink in color, but seem highly vascularized with red and purple blood-like vessels covering their surfaces; this altered, sickly appearance is likely a result of contamination by X Parasites.
During the first phase of the battle, the flowers aggressively pull Samus into their mouths if she touches their petals, continuously draining her health if she does not perform high jumps to escape their grasp. After Nettori begins firing Plasma Beams, the Sucker Plant Buds on the ceiling die and the mature Sucker Plants begin spitting out spores of their own, though theirs are released in pairs and quickly fall down in an arc at their sides instead of floating. The flowers themselves die after Nettori is reduced to a Core-X, leaving behind pools of water.
