Suite: Samus Aran - Galactic Warrior is an orchestral suite inspired by the Metroid series. The concert program credits Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano as composers, while Torsten Rasch was the arranger. It was performed by the WDR Radio Orchestra, and produced by Merregnon Studios as part of the live concert Symphonic Legends.

Description[]

Suite: Samus Aran - Galactic Warrior is about 7 minutes in length. The Symphonic Legends concert was originally performed on September 23, 2010 in Cologne Philharmonic Hall in Germany.

Torsten Rasch took an experimental, contemporary approach to composing Suite: Samus Aran - Galactic Warrior. Rather than simply arranging the themes for orchestra, Rasch chose to write music that captured the dark and frightening atmosphere of Metroid.[1] The end result sounds more similar to compositions by Igor Stravinsky or John Williams, rather than the works of Kenji Yamamoto or Minako Hamano.

A choir rendition of the Tourian theme can be heard about halfway through the suite. The suite ends with an arrangement of Theme of Samus. Aside from those two themes, the suite contains very few recognizable melodies or themes from the Metroid series. Because of this, Suite: Samus Aran - Galactic Warrior was met with a divisive reception, with some concert-goers appreciating the experimental approach and others disliking the lack of memorable themes.[2][3]

Trivia[]

  • Merregnon Studios later produced the Symphonic Selections concert in 2013, which featured a new orchestral suite titled Super Metroid - Into Red, Into Dark. Perhaps due to the critical reception of Suite: Samus Aran - Galactic Warrior, this new suite was more classically arranged and contained many more familiar themes.
