The "three rock corridor" is a room in Norfair. It appears, with significant differences between versions, in Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission.

Description[]

In Metroid, this is one of two corridors connecting the east and west green bubble shafts. Similar to other corridors in Norfair, it consists of midair platforms above a pool of lava that engulfs the floor. Most platforms are low enough that Samus can jump to them if she falls in. There is one elongated platform in the center of the room, composed of brownish red rocks and patches of green bubble-like material. Additionally, three stalactites formed out of the red rock tiles hang from the ceiling.

In Zero Mission, the room's appearance has been significantly altered with the increased memory of the Game Boy Advance. It is now set inside of a cave with extreme heat, making it unsafe for Samus if she does not have the Varia Suit. Of the two corridors connecting the shafts, this is the most dangerous due to the presence of lava and the aforementioned heat. There are now three large pillar-like rocks in the room that impede Samus's progression. She must utilize the Power Grip and her Morph Ball to jump atop midair platforms and climb over the rocks. The lava from the room's original appearance remains, and can pose a danger to Samus if she is not careful.

This room, along with much of Norfair as it appeared in Metroid and Zero Mission, is no longer accessible in Super Metroid.

134 BOUND OVER THE BARRIER (pg. 58)
"If you choose the high road, you'll deal with lava and high walls. While it's possible to roll through the passages near the ceiling then straighten out and grab the walls as you fall, it's easier to freeze enemies and use them as steps."
