Varmis is a boss featured in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It is a giant sand beast in the Sol Valley that is normally unaggressive, until it is mutated by Green Showers and swallows a Mech Part.

Description[]

Several Varmis can be seen and scanned by Samus in a wide crater-like region in the east of the Sol Valley. These Varmis are non-aggressive and will burrow away if she attempts to approach them.

When Samus attempts to collect the Mech Part in the eastern G.F. debris, she draws the attention of Varmis. Now larger and more aggressive due to the most recent Green Shower launched during Samus's expedition through Flare Pool, rather than fleeing it attacks, swallowing the container holding the Part before retreating to the Varmis crater to serve as its boss arena.

Battle[]

Varmis emerges from the opposite side of the arena, preceded by a sand spout, and charges towards Samus with its mouth open. When it reaches the opposite side of the arena, it submerges again and repeat this process several seconds later. Its weak spot is the orb at the end of its tail, forcing Samus to quickly dodge it as it gets close before turning sharply to pursue it from behind. If it strikes her it will forcibly dismount her from Vi-O-La, and if she rams its body she's thrown into the air, causing her to lose time remounting it or waiting to land.

Due to its size, Varmis is immune to Samus's suit weaponry and can only be harmed by Vi-O-La. Striking its tail orb with the energy glaive will briefly slow it, while ramming the orb with a boost will damage it.

After four hits, Varmis's tail orb becomes visibly damaged and it becomes more aggressive. Its charges now include breaching leaps that alter its trajectory and aim to crush Samus and it will barrel roll to the side. When reaching the opposite side of the arena, rather than burrowing immediately it rapidly turns and charges back the way it came, attempting to attack Samus as she pursues it. It will also begin to play dead, laying with its underbelly up and its tail orb safely beneath the sand before thrashing wildly at anything nearby.

Varmis dies after fourth further hits, flopping to the ground with its mouth open. Samus can then enter its gullet with the Morph Ball and lay a Power Bomb, destroying Varmis and the cargo container holding the Mech Part.
